The Gen Z Mind | SereinMind: Why Young Adults Overthink Every Decision

overthink

Should I take this job? Should I continue this relationship? Should I move to another city? What if I make the wrong choice?

For many young adults, even ordinary decisions can become mentally exhausting. Instead of making a choice and moving forward, the mind keeps analysing every possible outcome.

This is overthinking—a cycle in which thinking stops being useful problem-solving and becomes repetitive, anxiety-driven mental processing.

Why Do Young Adults Overthink?

1. Fear of making the wrong decision

Many young adults feel that one decision can determine their entire future. Choosing a career, partner, college, or city can therefore feel like a permanent test of whether they are “getting life right.”

2. Perfectionism

Perfectionism can create the belief that there is one perfect decision and that choosing incorrectly will have serious consequences.

But many life decisions don't have a perfect answer. They have trade-offs, learning opportunities, and consequences that can be managed over time.

3. Social comparison

Social media constantly exposes young adults to other people's careers, relationships, lifestyles, and achievements.

You may begin asking:“What if everyone else is making better choices than me?”

Comparison can make ordinary uncertainty feel like personal failure.

4. Fear of judgment

Some people overthink because they are worried about what parents, friends, colleagues, or society will think.

The question becomes less:

“What do I want?”

and more:

“What will everyone think about my decision?”

When Does Thinking Become Overthinking?

Healthy thinking helps you reach a decision.

Overthinking keeps you trapped in the decision.

You may notice yourself:

  • Replaying the same possibilities repeatedly

  • Asking several people for reassurance

  • Constantly changing your mind

  • Searching endlessly for more information

  • Imagining worst-case scenarios

  • Feeling unable to trust your own judgement

  • Delaying decisions because you want complete certainty

The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty.

The goal is to learn that you can tolerate uncertainty and still make a thoughtful decision.

How Can You Break the Cycle?

Start by asking:

What do I actually know?

What am I assuming?

What is within my control?

What is the next reasonable step?

Give yourself a realistic deadline for decisions that don't require endless analysis.

Most importantly, remember that a decision does not always have to be permanent. You can learn, adjust, change direction, and make a new decision later.

Final Thought

Your life does not depend on making every decision perfectly.

Sometimes confidence does not come before making a decision.

It develops because you make decisions and discover that you can handle the outcome.

If overthinking is affecting your relationships, career, sleep, or everyday functioning, counselling can provide a safe space to understand the underlying anxiety, perfectionism, self-doubt, and decision-making patterns.
